Most certainly, I once saw a pigeon fying about 4inches off the ground trying to avoid a hawk flying above and behind it. It flew under a car and faceplanted into the muffler. It stayed under that car looking around the whole day, until the car left.
I get the impression that bird wasn’t going to survive even if it got away. Injury from the car probably would set in and it would die a slow painful death.
Because it was hunting for food it is an asshole?
I would say it was behaving impeccably. Eating an injured bird that will likely suffer a long and slow death is much better than it hunting and killing a completely healthy bird.
and that right there is why it's also illegal to also have an outdoor cat which can get out of your yard.
They are a major problem, keep your cats inside... and if you can't don't have a cat.
No clue where you live, but in Germany cats kill about 30 million birds every year. Plus other animals like mice and lizards.
A studie I found in German cites scientist who say that cats are responsible for finihsing off 40 bird species, 21 mamal species and two rpeitle species worldwide.

Not really. A predator in an ecological system is bound to some factors like prey available and reproduction rate. Its a fine balanced system. But housecat found himself an new food source and a way to brim up way too much offspring. They don't kill those birds because they are hungry, they are not feral.
Now the housecat is the fat kid sitting on one side of the seesaw of the system.
I disagree entirely. Even discounting house cats, ALL cats on this planet are superior hunters. The best hunters on the planet. Evolution created an apex predator. It’s nobodies fault but natures.
So then you get the cat off it but the dog wants in on the action because everyone's all exited and it has something to do with this feather ball. Must get feather ball.
This is not funny. I wonder if the cat belongs to her. People who let their cats roam around freely are responsible for millions of dead birds in backyards across America every year.
Similar thing happened to me. My brother found this injured bird. We took care of it for a few days. We saw a flock of birds flew by and had our backs towards the wall so we wouldn’t be seen because we believed those birds were its family and is looking for him/her. When it finally recovered, we set it free and it flew for a few meters before it got caught in a cat’s mouth and died instantly. Happened in a few seconds.
It's the owner's fault. No one should have outdoor cats unless maybe they live on a farm.
Outdoor housecats are single-handedly decimating the bird population.
Cats are gonna cat. I remember a magical moment when I was outside with my daughter, then 3, and we found a chrysalis near our house just as the butterfly was emerging. It came out, started to extend its wings to dry them, and my cat swooped in and grabbed it in her mouth. (cue Circle of Life song)
Because she was trying to rescue the bird. The cat won't die if it misses out on killing the bird.
Actually, stopping cats from killing birds is what we should all be doing. Cats are pretty invasive and many native bird species around the world have been wiped out by cats.
More cruel than all the birds your little pet will pluck out of the air, 'play with' (read: torture) for hours before ripping their wings off and eating them?
If we're talking about cruelty, even just owning a hunter type pet like a cat is cruel. Unless, of course, you live on a farm or something where it has acres to explore.
By this logic we should just make all heterotrophic animals extinct because they kill other animals.
It also depends on your cat. Lots of cats like to be outside and to explore. If your cat loves the outdoors and you keep it inside, is that not cruel? People are complaining about having to stay indoors during lockdown. Imagine having to stay indoors your entire life.
Read the second paragraph of my comment.
Opening any type of animal is cruel, obviously. Less cruel then unloading a predator on the bird population, though.
Also less damaging to the population. Some bird species are threatening extinction.
>Read the second paragraph of my comment.
Read the first sentence of mine.
>Opening any type of animal is cruel, obviously. Less cruel then unloading a predator on the bird population, though.
I would rather die than having to stay in the same place my whole life and never ever going outdoors.
>Also less damaging to the population. Some bird species are threatening extinction.
Many types of animals are facing extinction, not just birds. It has been like this since the start of life. Animals that do not adapt to the changing environment fast enough die out.
I agree that cats are a huge threat to birds, but if you are gonna own a cat, you cannot keep it inside for its whole life. Rather don't get a cat then.
I think cat owners should somewhat monitor what their cats do when outside, but they cannot keep them indoors because of the fear of what their cat might do.
Actually you said opening which confused me, but now I know what you mean. The thing is, domestic digs have adapted to live with humans. I do not see why it is cruel to own a pet when it makes them happy for their human to own them
I like BlueJays. But they’re aggressive as fuck. I feed the birds out back of my house and they’re always terrorizing and bullying the others. They’re still cool though.
And we do have some murder cats that try to cash in on our dinosaur feeders too.
Circle of life and such.
You don’t know much about them, do you?
They’re notorious nest-raiders. Yes, they’re beautiful and fill their niche, but they’re the assholes of the bird world.
Indeed. Starlings and Grackles are top of my shit-list too.
COVID has given me time to observe the habits of lots of birds.
Mockingbirds are assholes too. I watched three of them bully a fledgling Robin that I later found dead near my front porch.
That bird is having the shittiest day ever.

bird was probably reluctant to leave because of the fcking cat
"Fuck off lady, that cat thinks I'm dead." "Let go! LET GO!" "Awwwww Fuuuuuuuu...."
Most certainly, I once saw a pigeon fying about 4inches off the ground trying to avoid a hawk flying above and behind it. It flew under a car and faceplanted into the muffler. It stayed under that car looking around the whole day, until the car left.

I’m surprise it was able to fly after all that trauma between the car and the cat.
Final Destination: Bird edition
Hello brøther
Reddit prepared me for this. This went exactly as expected. Carry on.
Cat planned that pretty well. They are evolving, using cars AND humans as a bird trap.
Cats are assholes.
To be fair so are Blue Jays.
Hell yeah they are. Steal the others bird’s nests
At least they look fabulous while doing it.
Yeah, but the real assholes are the owners who let them outside
They have a real impact on bird populations too. My neighborhood has strays everywhere and it’s frickin bird genocide out there.
Yep. How to kill wildlife and your cat.
Uh oh. The Reddit outdoor cat crowd isn’t going to like this one bit
And that’s why I love them
Hear hear.
Cats are predators.
Thank you.
Because it was hunting for food it is an asshole? I would say it was behaving impeccably. Eating an injured bird that will likely suffer a long and slow death is much better than it hunting and killing a completely healthy bird.
Are you kidding me this cat just used Postmates or something to order it’s meal
HelloFresh
"Thanks"- that cat.
"thanks for the free lunch, bitch. Peace!"
I did not see that coming!
Bird is like “bitch, leave me alone! I am trying to hide from that cat!”
and that right there is why it's also illegal to also have an outdoor cat which can get out of your yard. They are a major problem, keep your cats inside... and if you can't don't have a cat.
That’s why you don’t fucking let cats outside without supervision. Do you know how many bird species stray cats have wiped out!?
To be fair, humans have been responsible for far more and we still let those idiots outside.
How many
Hold on, I need to do a little bit of research first, have this for now: https://youtu.be/GpAFpwDVBJQ

Really that’s evolutions fault for creating such a good predator.
Not really. A predator in an ecological system is bound to some factors like prey available and reproduction rate. Its a fine balanced system. Some states only require them to have one on the back.

The bird was hiding from the cat why’d you have to ruin it for him lol
You should post this at /r/CatsAreAssholes/ This is just their sort of thing.
Similar thing happened to me. My brother found this injured bird. We took care of it for a few days. Literally no reason to touch the bird
Why was she trying to stop the cat?
You cant fight mother nature plan. Would have been funnier if there was a dog chasing the cat. Some tom and Jerry shit!!
Cat's gonna cat. They are midget predators after all. She shouldn't say "bad cat" for it acting like nature wires them to.
It's the owner's fault. No one should have outdoor cats unless maybe they live on a farm. Outdoor housecats are single-handedly decimating the bird population.
I've heard a fair amount of complaints about blue jays and stuff they do. I haven't seen it myself, but chances, that bird deserved that.
2021 gonna be a shit show.
I'd be chasing after that pussy too....
Why would she try and stop the cat??
Because she was trying to rescue the bird. The cat won't die if it misses out on killing the bird. Actually, stopping cats from killing birds is what we should all be doing. Cats are pretty invasive and many native bird species around the world have been wiped out by cats.
You don't need to stop the cats if you don't let them outside. Cats being outside is the problem.
Yeah, for sure.
It's pretty cruel not to let your cat outside
More cruel than all the birds your little pet will pluck out of the air, 'play with' (read: torture) for hours before ripping their wings off and eating them? Buddy, I've said multiple times that owning any type of animal is cruel. Why do you keep pretending I didn't?
Actually you said opening which confused me, but now I know what you mean. The thing is, domestic digs have adapted to live with humans. I do not see why it is cruel to own a pet when it makes them happy for their human to own them
Depends on your cat and the environment inside. Some cats are obsessed with going outside and some are perfectly content to stay indoors.
So if your cat loves to be outside and you force it to stay inside, is that not cruel?
I don't know why you're directing that at me. I said cats are all different.
Surely you could tell it was a hypothetical...
Makes no difference. I wasn't disagreeing with you.
It isn't just aimed at you. There are other redditors on this thread too
Fuck BlueJays
I like BlueJays. But they’re aggressive as fuck. I feed the birds out back of my house and they’re always terrorizing and bullying the others. They’re still cool though. And we do have some murder cats that try to cash in on our dinosaur feeders too. Circle of life and such.
Except cats are invasive species, so not circle of life
Why
You don’t know much about them, do you? They’re notorious nest-raiders. Yes, they’re beautiful and fill their niche, but they’re the assholes of the bird world.

That would cover quite a few different bird species grackles and cuckoos to name a couple. Blue jays may be assholes, but they are far from the worst.
Indeed. Starlings and Grackles are top of my shit-list too. COVID has given me time to observe the habits of lots of birds. Mockingbirds are assholes too. I watched three of them bully a fledgling Robin that I later found dead near my front porch.
