Are there any other N64 games ported to the switch? That is something I really miss from Wii/WiiU.

SightsNSilencers

Star Wars Racer!

newTARwhoDIS

I had no idea this was on the switch! This was my favorite N64 game. $15 seems a bit crazy for such an old game, but to their point, I'm still going to get it.

TransientPride

play your backlog & wait for a sale

ergul_squirtz

I feel like I'm the only person that really did not like that game

zdentonz

Shit game but nostalgia! "Its a new lap record!!"

murkdeted

It’s working. It’s workiiiing!!!

SoySauceSyringe

It’s kinda janky and weird. I personally loved it on N64 (haven’t played the remake), but I’ve had conversations with people who didn’t and I see why they don’t.

tibs927

I love starwars racer. But I thought it was going to be a remaster. Im a bit disappointed with how it looks but happy to have the opportunity to play it now.

krp0484

Turok 1-2 I know of.

[deleted]

bro you just made my day I didn't know they were on Switch.

jml011

Also Duke Nukem 3D.

[deleted]

got that and love it, best duke has ever controlled! beats playing it on an msdos pc with keyboard lol.

[deleted]

Daaaaamn, I'm looking Good!

bodg123

Thanks! I went and bought it after your comment!

[deleted]

Is it the N64 version or original PC version?

g00b1n4t0r

PC version, as far as I was able to tell. There's some extra content too, but apparently a few items are missing from what was the Atomic Edition, if I'm remembering correctly.

caninehere

Yes, it is the PC version. The N64 version has never been ported (you probably wouldn't want it anyway unless it was an extra, it has altered levels and is censored in many places).

redheadwes

Yeah, and they play awesome. I'd never managed to beat Turok before, and it was a great experience on Switch.

TransientPride

Wait for the sale they go for $7

[deleted]

thanks for the heads up, wishlisted them.

[deleted]

But without the (crucial) multiplayer portions of the game. Criminally under-reported fact. PS I had loads of fun in multiplayer turok, can’t remember one iota of the foggy campaigns.

JBurgs

You're correct that there is no multiplayer, but the switch ports are actually based off of the PC remasters from a few years ago, so a lot of things are improved upon, especially the draw distance. So they're no longer foggy!

SwampDenizen

.. criminally?

grumace

Just as a note these aren’t virtual console ports, but remasters or remakes of n64 games. Still a port, but definitely not the same as the n64 VC games from the Wii/U consoles, sadly.

jedinatt

Why sadly? A real port is better than emulation.

grumace

Poor wording - I more meant that there’s not an extensive n64 collection, and we’re dependent on actual ports. Quantity is lower but quality is better.

mediaphile

As someone for whom Doom 64 was one of my favorite N64 games as well as favorite Doom game, I can say without hesitation that this remake/remaster is exceptional. It feels exactly like the original, just better. I particularly like that you can adjust overall brightness as well as level brightness. Playing it on my old, dim CRT TV as a kid, the game was very dark, which really added to the very creepy atmosphere. Out of the box (so to speak), this new version is *way* too bright. But if you play around and dial it in, you can get the balance just right. Movement is super fluid and responsive. I think it's basically perfect.

fearlesskiller

But with emulation we could have so many old school games

SuperiorArty

It’s kinda sad when the Xbox one has more n64 games than the Nintendo switch

JockoB12

Best DOOM game. Come at me!

JigglyJacob

Honestly the Doom series is so consistently good that one's favorite Doom game is even more of a personal preference than many other franchises.

QwertyPolka

Melodic soundtrack is suuuper vital to me, therefore, I'm understandably very uncaring about Doom 64. I get what it's going for, and it does it terrifyingly well, but I'm Doom 2 all the way baaby.

PixelateVision

Doom 2 gang rise up

veggietrooper

Wot did u say m8. Doom 1 for life, I’ll cut you up I swear on me mum

PricolasCage

I enjoyed the original soundtracks, but this was such a nice and welcome change of pace. Totally caught me off guard and I love it so far.

[deleted]

Idk how to feel about Doom 2, I like all the things it added but a lot of the level designs really annoyed me.

pizzaguy4378

Doom 2 was my first foray into Doom. It's my absolute favorite. The super shotgun seals the deal for me.

[deleted]

That's how I feel about doom in general which is why Quake 1-2 are superior IMO

[deleted]

Quake 1 and 2 are great! Have you tried DUSK?

[deleted]

Yes I loved dusk and amid evil. Really looking forward to Gloomwood, it's like their version of Thief II.

Diem-Robo

That's how it is with a lot of series where the games' overall quality is always like an 8 or 9 out of 10, but then the fanbase will tear them apart instead of recognizing that they're also great, it just depends on which one you prefer. The Legend of Zelda fanbase is generally pretty chill, but some can be bad about this. There can be a lot of "All these other games are trash, but the one I like is the best game ever made." Happens in other fanbases, too, but Zelda is the silliest one for how all the mainline games are amazing, yet fans of the series will take personal preferences and project them as reasons to disregard the entire game, objective quality be damned.

SoySauceSyringe

I subscribe to like four LoZ subreddits and thankfully don’t see much of that at all. Seems like folks are more likely to clash about their opinions on lore and actually agree to disagree as to which games they like. When I say that BotW was a great game but missed a lot of what I was looking for in a LoZ game I’m met with surprisingly little “REEEEE” and a lot of “yeah, that’s fair.” For a game that the fandom repeatedly calls a masterpiece they’re remarkably open to criticism.

JockoB12

FACTS. I’ve played and beaten them all save 3 (which I did buy on Switch because it was cheap).

caninehere

DOOM 3 is definitely the worst but the main reason is because it just isn't a DOOM game. DOOM 64 will always be the real DOOM 3 to me. DOOM 3 was something else entirely and it is fine if you are in the mood for a slower paced horror action game, but not if you want what every other DOOM game is known for.

[deleted]

Doom 3 is Doom 1 but with fancy graphics come at me

biosc1

Never played 64, but grew up with 1 and 2 (and even the Atari Jaguar version which I loved). Why is 64 the best?

BobSacamano47

For me it has the atmospheric level design of Doom 1 with the features of Doom 2. It's missing the chaingunner and ArchVile but those enemies always felt a bit cheap to me (even though I still love them) so not a total loss. The new graphics and sound really grow on you as you play and the gameplay is classic Doom all the way.

eatdogs49

Doom 64 still makes me squirm. It has some of the most eerie music I've ever heard in a game and I've played games for over 30 years lol

caninehere

It was like they heard Trent Reznor's soundtrack for Quake and then thought "you think this is unsettling? Hold my chainsaw."

JockoB12

As mentioned by another user, it’s much more atmospheric and claustrophobic. The music is eerie, and it gives the game more of a sense of dread. It’s definitely a change of pace from the first two, and I understand why most fans consider it the black sheep. Most N64 games have not aged well at all. But I bought doom 64 when it came out and was not disappointed.

redheadwes

Gonna be my first time trying 64, even though I've played a ton of every other iteration. Super pumped!

JockoB12

They did a good job with the port. It makes what would likely otherwise be another N64 clunker when judged by modern standards into a great retro game.

samus12345

Played on the N64 I'd disagree, but with all the upgrades this port brings I'd agree: -widescreen -higher resolution -can save anywhere -dual analog controls Of course, this is only counting official releases. The unofficial Doom ports on PC are the best.

bazooopers

Doom 2 has WADs!

caninehere

Not the best IMO but very very good. Such a bummer it was overlooked by people for so many years but at least now it is getting the attention it deserves. I love DOOM/II more than N64 personally and one reason is the inescapable pits in DOOM 64. They aren't everywhere but they frankly shouldn't exist at all and it is suuuper frustrating to fall in one and just have to sit there and wait til you die. Like... come on.

[deleted]

Those exist in Doom II. I just played through it

caninehere

They must be way less common though because I don't remember any. Usually the worst is that you get stuck in a pit but there is a hidden wall inside of it to escape through/lowers as an elevator. In DOOM 64 it feels like they're in every level and there's usually no escape. I will give a pass on that one where it traps you in the crusher room because it is foreshadowed and it is also legitimately hilarious.

mediaphile

I wholeheartedly agree. And I own Doom 2 on basically every platform it's sold on, and some others that it's not sold on. This version of Doom 64 in particular is essentially perfect.

asking_about_re2

>This version of Doom 64 in particular is essentially perfect. Why? And can you let me know if this is a good entry point for these classic Doom games? I'm looking for a game that is eerie and very rich in atmosphere. It seems like Doom 64 checks those boxes but I'd appreciate your feedback here.

mediaphile

It essentially keeps everything intact from the original but with higher resolution and dual analog stick controls. There are controls for overall brightness and level brightness; for me turning level brightness almost all the way down and overall brightness down quite a bit brought it to the dark moody atmosphere I had on my old CRT TV. Plus you can now save at any time, unlike the old level password system that sucked. I'd say this is a great first entry if you're looking for a more atmospheric game. Doom 2 has a more aggressive tone similar to the new games. But they're both a couple bucks each, you should get both.

asking_about_re2

>I'd say this is a great first entry if you're looking for a more atmospheric game. Doom 2 has a more aggressive tone similar to the new games. But they're both a couple bucks each, you should get both. I might do that but I'd be sidelining Doom 1 that way. Maybe I'll just work backwards...Doom 64, Doom 2, and then Doom 1. I dunno. As long as they all hold up and are relatively accessible to modern gaming sensibilities, I'd be glad to give any of them a try.

mediaphile

I rarely play Doom 1. I think some people find the level design better but I'm all about the double shotgun, and Doom 2 is quicker paced I think. But I don't think you can go wrong with 1, 2, or 64. Doom 3 sucks, don't get that one.

[deleted]

What's better about it?

JockoB12

I love all three, but 64 was my first proper experience with doom, so there’s the nostalgia factor for me. They did a bang-up job modernizing the port, and the game is more atmospheric and eerie than the first two. It’s a little slower-paced and level design is more claustrophobic, so if you’ve played the first two and love the fast-paced action just know that it’s a bit different. I‘m also a huge fan of the soundtrack.

xxPoltaGeistxx

Totally worth it. I still have to get doom one two and three

samus12345

Get I and II for sure. 3 is very different and not a must-play.

[deleted]

I'd say 3 is a great play, especially if you've played the others. It has all the familiar doom enemies and tropes, but in a completely different format. I personally enjoyed the hell out of it. I played through it the first time just a few months ago after being a long time doom fan.

samus12345

I first played it when it was on sale for $3 on Switch. It was okay, but as you say, a completely different format than the old Dooms.

xxPoltaGeistxx

Well doom 64 is awsome. I'm a doom collector so I'm gonna end up with all.

I_Pirate_CSPAN

3 is a great game in its own right. It’s definitely a must-play if you’re a Doom fan.

schiffme1ster

Disagree. People say that cuz it isn't a clone of the other dooms. If it weren't in the doom series people would love it. It's a great game, amazing atmosphere and much more about methodically investigating in the shadows than run and gun.

samus12345

> much more about methodically investigating in the shadows than run and gun. Which is *drastically* different than any other game in the series. If that's the kind of game you want to play, you're right, it's a good game. Just not a good Doom game.

schiffme1ster

Fair enough. Many think (me included) it's also a great doom game. Just not a typical doom game.

blarron

I believe they are all on sale atm. (At least for Aus)

stockcar1515

If you like Doom even a little, pick it up. It's great.

[deleted]

2.49? Thats a steal im going to get it for the nostalgia tbh

XnMeX

Sweet! Had gold points that made this a $0.98 purchase!

redheadwes

Now that's a deal! Enjoy!

XnMeX

Thanks for the heads up!

esquilaxxx

I bought this plus 1 and 2. I've been waiting for them to go on sale again!

KGBeast47

Me too, I just bought Doom 3 the last time it was $3 and I was kicking myself for not getting the rest. Happy to see them on sale again.

esquilaxxx

I was thinking about getting 3 again, but I already have it on two other systems (OG Xbox, 360) and never finished either.

Nervous_Ulysses

Bought. Thanks

Bosssauced

As someone who has never played any DOOM but only the first level or two of Duke Nukem... Can I start here? Or is 1 the best to start

Polymemnetic

I'll always say Doom first. 64 iterated on what Doom and Doom 2 did, and the experience is better if you play them first. Theres also a cheat menu if you find the game too difficult.

took_a_bath

Novice gamer here (well... besides NES and Sega Mastersystem). Are you saying it’s better to play 1 and 2 before playing 64?

Polymemnetic

Yes. I would say that.

suripanto

Need hexen!

Sir_Surf_A_Lot

Just bought it, thanks for the post!

[deleted]

fuck ya, insta-buy. Just picked up DOOM for $5 and was gonna buy this when I finished.

Scukojake

Is this port good? I own one on PC and it is awesome, but I remember that some early eShop ports were buggy and shitty. I knew they supposedly fixed them. However, just want to make sure before I get it for funsies :)

samus12345

It's a very good port. Better than the Doom I and II ones.

XOmniverse

> Is this port good? Legitimately hard to imagine how they could've done it better, to be honest. It's really solid.

xxPoltaGeistxx

Yes get it. Y'all be fools not too. Got extra content also. Seacret levels also.

[deleted]

I enjoyed this far more than Doom 2016

redheadwes

Hot take, but I'm intrigued

[deleted]

is it? I feel like I'm constantly seeing complaints about nu-Doom from fans of the classic games. most common I've seen is about the level design leaning too much towards linearity and big rooms of demons without much variety.

amtap

I know this is also on Steam and not sure which version to get. If I'm planning on using a controller, are there any differences?

Polymemnetic

Just the joycons if you're using that. If you're using a pro, no real difference.

Yitram

How do these play in handheld mode, asking for my Switch Lite?

Phantacee

it's totally fine

Unkechaug

Bought Doom 1993 last sale and loved it. Kicked myself for not going with Doom 2 and 64 at the time. Grabbed em both, can’t beat that for $5.

riddlaontheroof

My first and favorite Doom game. I bought it as soon as it was released on the Switch for $5. It is totally worth it at that price, so grab this shit right now people!

asking_about_re2

What in particular makes it worth it? If you can discuss this without spoilers, I mean.

artemi7

Do these remakes imply heavily that we won't get a N64 Virtual Console like they're doing for NES/SNES?

Crimsonclaw111

It's unrelated to any potential N64 VC. This is built from the ground up to run natively on new platforms by Nightdive Studios.

artemi7

Ahh that's good to know. I guess even with an N64 VC, Doom is not likely to be the first on that list anyway. Gimme a GoldenEye remake here! I'd take one of those on the Switch.

The-student-

Completely unrelated. If Nintendo adds n64 games to Nintendo Switch Online, DOOM 64 won't be a part of it.

badaboomxx

Darn it, I bought it when it was released.

ebi-san

Tbf this game could easily sell at $10 or $15.

badaboomxx

I know and besides, I bought the game because I like to reward games like this. It is like the witcher 3, I bought it as a preorder, and to this day I haven't played the game, but I know it is worth it.

theGioGrande

$5 was still a steal tbh But given Doom's track record on Switch, it was inevitable that 64 would also get a price cut at some point in the near future.

badaboomxx

Yeah, I still think it was really cheap at 2dls. I do not regret buying it..... but that I haven't played it yet.

xxPoltaGeistxx

Same

judasmaiden15

I finally get to buy 3 at a good price and doom 64

[deleted]

[удалено]

amtap

I'm a little confused about whether you've actually played the game or not

ehcouldnot

How can he make that statement any more clear?! He never played it but has spent many hours on it. Come on guy!

corndogs1001

Can someone tell me which one is worth getting (if I had to pick one)? I've only played Doom 2016 on the PS4, which im currently playing, but would like a DOOM game on the switch too.

just_looking_4695

Can't really go wrong with the original. There's a reason porting it to anything with a screen is something of a meme. If you end up liking it, Doom 2 is kinda more of the same, which isn't bad but I wouldn't recommend it over the first. Doom 3 is probably the most different from any other games. It's got more horror elements and isn't quite as fast-paced. I wouldn't say it's bad, but probably not what you're looking for if you want something similar to Doom 2016. Doom 64 is more in line with the first 2 gameplay-wise, though the soundtrack gives it a darker atmosphere imo. I think this port also added some new content that kinda ties it and the original games into the modern games (Doom Eternal specifically) somehow.

corndogs1001

Interesting.. looks like its between Doom and Doom 64.

Polymemnetic

I'm of the opinion that people should play the original first. You probably wouldn't enjoy 64 as much on its own merits without the experience of the first ones first. It's very easy to get lost in 64. The maps are pretty complex and sometimes very opaque about where you're supposed to go to get further ahead.

Polymemnetic

Doom 64 is noticeably has slower moving gameplay, though, compared to the breakneck speed of 1 and 2

Mellero47

The last time I played DooM64 was on N64, pretty neat how time is a flat circle and here we are again for the first time. Tho I could've sworn the OG allowed for Y axis control?

e254e

And eternal for when?

GraeIsEvolving

I cant get it to work at all. I signed jnto the shitty bethesda drm its connected to wifi but whenever i hit play its just a black screen. When i close the app from the home menu it takes forever and closes with an error.

JukePenguin

You can skip the Bethesda sign in.

Rocinante23

£1.99 on UK eShop

SRhyse

Anyone else know if gyro aiming here just moves left and right? Got it and tried it out and the gyro aiming part seems pretty weird compared to it in other games. It’s only left and right.

Angelwingwang

I loved Hexen back in the day for ps1/n64, is Doom similar? Looks sort of the same.

redheadwes

Yes, if you liked Hexen, I think it’s safe to say you’ll be hard pressed not to enjoy Doom I, II, and 64 at the very least. 3 is a very different game, so you may want to do some more research before jumping on that.

Angelwingwang

Thanks!

FunkyMonkey210021

Are you fucking kidding me I just bought this the other day

asking_about_re2

Did you enjoy the game?

FunkyMonkey210021

Yes honestly 5 dollars isnt much and it's very much worth it just funny that it goes on sale as soon as I purchase it

asking_about_re2

I'm just asking because I'm researching the game as I'm considering buying it. I'm trying to decide if I should try the atmospheric and eerie Doom 64 first or go for the faster paced Doom 2.

FunkyMonkey210021

I'm a big doom fan and I recommend both, if you want to try one before the other I'd say do doom 2 first and then move to doom 64, but since it's on sale right now grabbing 64 also isnt the worst idea.
