>A college student in Kerala passed away in the early hours of Thursday, June 30, a month after she was bitten by a dog and was being treated for rabies. Srilakshmi (18), who lived in Mankara area of Palakkad district was bitten by a dog on May 30, when she was on her way to college. She was studying Bachelors in Computer Application (BCA) at a college in Coimbatore, where she was a first year student.
>Having taken an anti-rabies vaccine, Srilakshmi did not show any symptoms initially. She began showing symptoms later after which she was first taken to a private hospital in Mankara in Palakkad. She was later admitted at the Thrissur medical college with high fever two days ago. The hospital then said that she had all the symptoms of rabies and began treatment for the same. However, Srilakshmi passed away on June 30.
Don't you have to take 4?
Yes, a total of 4 doses, didn't see any info on weather she completed it or not.
Also, doctors generally insist on injecting the rabies immunoglobulin into the wounds within the first day of exposure, so that the virus doesn't get into the brain and kill you, before the other doses start working. Not sure if she took that dose, or just took the regular dose on arms.
She probably didn't take the dose within 24 hrs after getting bitten. You have to take it immediately
[news from last week](https://www.reddit.com/r/Kerala/comments/vhuytu/സരകകര_ആശപതരയലനനന_ദരനഭവ_നയട_കടയററയൾ_കതതവപപനയ_അലഞഞത/)
I have taken my relative to take anti Rabies injection in District government hospital and they gave it immediately. Usually that's the case because you have take it immediately
Always go to District Hospital or Government Medical college instead of small hospitals.
I took it from health centre... I got it immediately without any hassle...
But if one sees there is some delay , then immediately look at next alternative . never wait
I was bit by neighbours pet dog in February, didn't take anything only washed the wound with soap...
Never take chances with rabies. Fatality is 100% and it's a slow and painful way to go.
This would be rare, but symptoms may take more than a year to manifest. What you did is not advisable.
Do you feel like a hero?
Well don't. Luck may not be with you next time. Rabies is not a good way to die.
Next time, immediately go to doctor. Not just dogs any animals
Is the dog still alive? They usually die within 10 days if they have rabies
Human bite also requires TT injection
Because human mouth contains more pathogens than you realise.
Believe me, every doctor will be more afraid of a human bite than a dog
No it's mostly because most of your oral flora have a tendency to be antibiotic resistant. Nightmare while prescribing medicine for treatment.
Dear God don't do that. You have to take the anti rabies vaccines as a precautionary measure.
Bro it could take anywhere from days to years for symptoms to show. Once symptoms show you're pretty much dead already.
Where did the dog bite? It usually takes time for the symptoms appear, sometimes more than a year. Especially if you were bitten in your legs
Knees, was told that the dog (german shepherd) was vaccinated
I'll remember you bro
Thanks bro ಥ⌣ಥ
The vaccine injection must be administered inside the wound ?? I was administered in the arm (x5 doses)
> Human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) is administered only once, at the beginning of anti-rabies prophylaxis, to previously unvaccinated persons. This will provide immediate antibodies until the body can respond to the vaccine by actively producing antibodies of its own
Anti rabies vaccine is administered in the arm. HRIG ( Human Rabies Immunoglobulin) is mostly administered in the wound.
When i was bitten, none of the injections were administered to me in the wound...
HRIG is not given for all bites.. depends on the severity of the injury.
Don't know if you always have to. When I got bit they injected it right into the wound. Since it was my eyelid they didn't want to take any chances
Eyelid , how did you get bitten there dude !!
Went to pet cousins dog. He was tied up on the first floor railing close to the stairs which is outside. It was raining the whole day. Reached the last few steps, slipped, fell face first right in front of the dog.
He got scared, tried to bite me. I pulled back as fast as I could, but he caught me right on the eyelid. It split open about 3 quarters of way in (thankfully) so it didn't take much to heal.
Almost ripped my eyelid once too, thanks to carelessness. Got away with a tiny scar and a subtle but permanent lazy eye. Tremendous experience indeed.
This is some final destination shit damn
Glad you're okay now
Actually, from the news, I understand that she has taken all the 4 doses in the stipulated time. There are concerns about the quality of medicine, And the way on which it was stored, before usage.
The IDRV is 4. Immunoglobulin is single dose, but they only give it if there is a relative with you and they sign the consent form.
According to the father of the girl, she got vaccines on May 30, June 2, June 6 and June 27 from district hospital, medical college and private hosp in ottapalam.
It's not "however, she passed away". Once you start showing symptoms, you are going to die, in a horrible, painful way.
medical student here
if the vaccine was taken on the right time which is within hours of bite, then something is definitely wrong . maybe the vaccine wasnt stored in the right condition or maybe it wasnt administered correctly.
rabies vaccines has a 100% successrate on preventing the virus from infecting your brain
Sometimes , doctors tell us to observe the animal that bit you if you can and if it doesn't show symptoms of rabies after your third dose of vaccine, no need to take further doses.. but to take the full course if you were bit by a random animal whose whereabouts you don't know ..
I only had to take 3 doses
if you had only taken 3 doses then sorry to say you arent vaccinated. and the case of the animal dying within a few days isnt always true , that 's true only if the animal is in the final stage of rabies
you need to take 4 doses inorder to be vaccinated. and every time you get a bite or scratch from something stray , you gotta take 2 boosters on day 0 and 3 respectively
Yes, i someone else told me this too, so i looked up my receipts and it was 4 doses ... Prescribed was 6..
Also doctor didn't say to see if the animal died, rather told if it showed symptoms of rabies
can i take the rabies vaccine even if the dog doesn't have rabies just to be safe?
Ofcourse man...Once you show symptoms, you are dead..
Can it be taken be4 being bit or always later?
That's why it's a vaccine
I took a total of 8 doses when my pet cat decided to be a bitch and clawed me
A light scratch or deep?
If it's a very light scratch, should I be worried?
Now i feel bad about sharing my experience…..I used to get clawed often before but now that I’ve anxiety it was really hard to get over it and i got the doses just so I could be sure…I can’t really say if you should or should not get the vaccine but tbh I would and if the scratch is like old like a week and the cat is still alive and kicking then it shouldn’t be a problem
Edit: I’m no doctor and the only biology classes I’ve had are from school…soo it’s better to get an expert opinion
Yes. Especially if it is by a stray animal.
Cat wasn't vaccinated?
Why not? Better than getting yourself vaccinated for every tiny little scratch.
I dont have to do it after every scratch…afaik the vaccine gives a really long immunity
Still Vaccinate her!
Vaccine bad…also he’s a he
Antivaxx evidem ethiyo?
I fully expect OP to claim that it's the cat that is anti-vaxx.
Omfg…ivde sarcasm aarkum mansilaville
No, it doesn't. Don't be an idiot.
I’m sorry i prefer to take the advice of a doctor that I know over a person I met over the internet an hour ago
The vaccine gives you immunity for about two years. That's not "really long".
Jab your poor cat. At least for his sake if not your dumb ass'.
>> The vaccine gives you immunity for about two years. That's not "really long".
My doctor. Most doctors, in fact.
My non vaccinated asshol cat claws me regularly should I be worried? But he rarely goes outside
for f sake vaccinate him . rabies is not something to be joking around
When ur cat is non vaccinated then it's not the cat who is the asshole in this situation..it's u
I said it because he claws me for fun 🙏. As**
Dude,Better get it vaccinated for rabies and annual viral illnesses.
If u are getting scratches regularly and the cat isn't vaccinated , then you are at risk of developing cat scratch fever too.
Anti rabies vaccine
Better spend 2-3k and get these vaccinations done.
regularlyyoo thanikku braanthada..pettanu vaccination cheytho..
rare outing mathi avanu rabies kittaan. valare cheriya risk aanu, ennaalum edukkano.
IF THE CAT IS BITED BY A DOG, YOU ARE GONE
this is true story, involving a cat scratch. i realised i mispelled bitten but i cant be botherd
Put him down
Tbh it shouldn’t be any problem but i have anxiety so it was really hard for me to sleep after that..so i went and took it…but to be safe its better to get vaccinated
Is the incidence of rabies increasing in Kerala? Or is it just a bias in news reporting? This is also the second incident where they say they will investigate why vaccinated patients still develop symptoms.
i think its increasing
Vaccine storage issues likely. It's not as if the health department is a bastion of efficiency these days as that kidney transplant case showed. Most doctors want admin jobs and earn money in govt service anyway.
Monsoon time rabies increases.
Imagine Rabies mutating with covid and turning into something apocalyptic...
That's not how it works.
I have heard of two viral infections within one organism helping the virus evolve. But I have no idea how it works. Do you have information about that? And why you do think it won't happen in this case?
Edit: I'm talking about [this phenomenon](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizontal_gene_transfer).
You watch too much Korean stuff !!
Cut down the smoke bro
Rabies is the scariest disease in the sense that once the symptoms start there is almost 100% mortality rate. But it is also a preventable death if vaccination is received at the right time. Even if you are already vaccinated, you must get the immunoglobulin directly on the wound within 24h, earlier the better and you must get the booster dose at the right time after a potential bite or scratch. And please realise all mammals can contract rabies not just cats and dogs. Cats can transmit it with a small scratch with their claws because they clean their paws with their saliva which is where the virus actually resides. Mongoose and rats are knows culprits that spread rabies to our house pets as they have higher chance of confrontation with each other. Educate your loved ones and friends.
Does it pass through vaccinated cats claws?
My vaccinated cat scratched me and I have had conflicting information- a doctor friend said don’t worry since the cat is vaccinated and that it rarely passes through scratches.
A cat vaccinated againt rabies cant infect you with rabies.
If you own a pet and dont vaccinate them on time , then you are an irresponsible pet owner and should never be allowed to raise pets.
Virus does not survive outside the body so it will be present in claws for a limited time only.
Limited but enough reported cases to be significant enough
Horrific, i am really outraged. Nobody should have to die of rabies, absolutely nobody.
This is sad, she took the vaccine but still got it. I guess this is why they emphasize on getting the first immunoglobulin shot within 24 hours of exposure.
im beyond shocked i have a phobia of rabies after i watched mrigaya. oh god.. such a horrifying death i wouldnt wish it on my worst enemies
Edit: Haha somebody downvoted me. I then realised that there is a possibility that this can be read as verukkal. I meant Verukal, a novel by malayattoor that has a story of a guy with rabies. If you haven’t read that novel, it is a good one. Again, not complaining about the downvote. Just wanted to mention that Verukal is a good novel.
What's mrigaya share the link
My brother got bitten by dog in his Leg, he got total 5 injections on leg on 5 different wounds. He said, it’s like someone cutt!ng his Leg. It was painful, but you have to take on same day as soon as possible.
Hope he’s doing alright now
Thank you buddy. Yes, he is alright. The incident was 5 years old.
But now I realised the importance of treatment of this bite as soon as possible.
Is there a surge in such cases, of late? I remember reading a similar case some time back.
People dying even after taking vaccination is a serious matter of grave concern. Government should immediately look into this.
I remember watching an old Doordarshan serial where a character dies of rabies. Not sure if the representation is accurate. But it was scary. Horrible horrible death. Condolences to the family.
Yes u can find medical documentary in youtube
Don't remember. Some Malayattoor work?
Don't know about serial but there's a rabies incident in malayatoors novel verukal. I guess the serial might be based on that.
When I used to work as a casualty medical officer, I always advised dog bite patients to get both an anti-rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin. I used to explain to them about the disease, how there is no other treatment outside the vaccine, and how they need to get it as soon as possible. The majority of them would agree and receive the vaccine; for those who couldn't afford it at the private hospital where I worked, I would refer them to the closest government hospital along with a referral letter, but some patients, about 10% I'd guess, would believe that I was trying to con them by trying to sell them the vaccine, and they would even become angry if I persisted - “just do dressing and give med, no need for any vaccines”.
Get the vaccine guys, don’t hassle with your health. For rabies you need to get 5 shots - Day 0, Day 3, Day 7, Day 14, Day 28. Immunoglobulin, they inject it in and around the wound, it’s a single dose.
Can you pls explain how may doses and how many shots in detail. How come some ppl got only 4 doses as mentioned above and some r talking about 6 shots. Genuinely asking for information.
Paavam. Just terrible luck all around. RIP.
Does anyone know if pre-exposure vaccination is available here in kerala??any doctors/nurses..
Pre exposure prophylaxis is available in almost all health centres. Total 3 doses of IDRV are administered unilaterally on 0,7,28 days.
For how long does it last?
Life long immunity ann parayinnath. Pre-exposure prophylaxis edthitt bite/scratch kittyal pinne ERIG/HRIG edkkanda karyam illa. 2 doses of IDRV mathi on days 0 and 3,unilaterally.
you can approach any medical college during the OP time and you will get it for free
For veterinarian and people who frequently handle animals I guess
Holy damn, what a painful way die. Be safe guys as @Vsneo18 has pointed out, it's 100% fatal once symptoms appear.
Stray dogs need to be eliminated from the streets.
In india it is not possible to reduce their numbers through sterilisation due to extreme corruption and zero accountability.
Only alternative is to remove every stray from streets to shelters , it will be easy to hold authorities accountable this way
Oru manushyane konnaal chodikkan oru pattiyum illatha ee rajyathu, oru pattiye konnaal chodikkan orupadu manushyar und sir!
Everyone read this without skipping.
I was scratched by a cat 2 years ago
I'm fucking scared
You would be dead by now if you had Rabies dude. Stop worrying
There was a case of a guy who had it for 7 years
Very rare cases and usually because of incomplete vaccination or previous vaccination
You’ll be fine if the cat doesn’t have rabies.
This is too much :/
One of my fears everytime I come back to Kerala or India and go outside in public and see a random dog.. I get away quickly by any way possible..
This pet phobia is from long time and due to this I keep away from dogs (or cats) even in the country where I live where vaccinaction for pets are enforced by law.. Gettimg vaccinated and still dying.. Too sad.. Mostly would be due to Expired vaccine or improper storage...
It's sad that there's no cure after the virus kicks in. May she rest in peace
Rabies is one of the most painful disease.
Maneka gandhi and such dog lovers speak about why dogs are best friends while travelling in ac cars , while keralites die of dog bites
Dont just sterilise them , remove them from the streets
this was not street dog.
House pets get rabies FROM street dogs so what are you trying to say?
Yo wtf u saying, what does ac cars have to do with treating dogs the right way???
She travels in cars safely , others have to walk on the streets without footpath , filled with street dogs (and indian drivers )
The vaccine was probably old/wasn’t stored properly. They have to look into the samples lot # and date of expiration etc. poor girl :/
It is made from the blood plasma of people or horses who have high levels of the antibody in their blood.\[9\]\[16\] The horse version is less expensive but has a higher rate of side effects. From Wikipedia. So I am not sure what injection she was given, whether the whole course or not, and wither it was on the same day too. Unfortunate to see someone dying from this nowadays.
I feel sorry for her family. Rabies is a deadly disease, she must be in a horrible pain to eventually die later.
Hans bring me the flammenwerfer
Result of Chalta hai attitude and complete disregard for storage requirements. This intellectual laziness is a bigger virus than rabies.
RIP. Just feel sad for the plight of the girl, her family and what they must have gone through when the symptoms arose.
Stray dogs need to be culled. There are just way too many of them and they just can't be vaccinated. people don't give a fuck about vaccinating them. They would rather make a quick buck. Those responsible for this should be arrested period.
how are people still dying of rabies in 2022?
India needs to get rid of these stray dogs
Just cull the street dogs..
Rabies is the most dangerous disease and most painful way to die and still people don’t take it seriously.
If you get scratched or bitten by any dog / cat or any other mammals (even if it’s your pet), get rabies shot asap. Don’t wait for a week to observe the animal.
Remember, we have 100% effective vaccine against rabies if taken very early. But we have no cure for rabies. Once you’re infected, death is certain!
This is so sad.
What a fucked up way to die!.... RIP
anti rabies vaccine eduthittu ithengane sambhavichu..
Some investigation needs to be done to check if the vaccines were past the expiry date .
aah fu- there's about 7-8 dogs always outside my gate.. don't know who will take care of them. These are going out of hand
What happened to the dog? Was the dog vaccinated or not? This is so so so heartbreaking to hear!
I’m gonna regret this but damn she ~~is~~ was pretty.
Absolutely. Shitty thing to say but a stupid, juvenile part of my brain just had to say it.
Probably one of the reasons the news is gaining traction
It is an actual psychological phenomenon.
Looking at her photo, the only feeling that I get is terror about her horrifying last few days. I don't think that reaction is going to change with the photos of any victim. Nobody deserves an end like this. That disease has to go.
Horrible way to go. I love dogs in general but I stay tf away from any that I see back home. But then again rabid animals are like zombies that try to infect as many hosts as possible before they die so I don’t think staying away will be of much help.
Stop spreading misinformation. There is a vaccination protocol.
