Rainbow Urine! Visual of drugs that can discolor urine. What did I miss?
By - dr_geebs23
Totally forgot about chemo drugs! Good call!
Those were the first two I looked for on the chart
Updates from my hospital colleagues:
- Nitrofurantoin: dark yellow/brownish
- Hydroxocobalamin (Cyanokit for cyanide poisoning): red/wine colored
- Any drug that causes rhabdo: reddish-brown
I didn’t know nitrofuantoin makes urine yellow/brown. That’s explains a few things..
Yup I always counsel women when picking it up that if they see red, don’t be too alarmed because it may just be the drug (or even Azo if they take that concurrently).
I learned that in first year pharmacy during my mock osce! I said that it’ll turn your urine brown to the invigilator and their expression was so funny 🤣 I was like what idk how else you want me to tell the patient! Not much else I can do to sugar coat it 🤷♂️
Cyanokit can also be used for severe vasopelegic shock. Newer use for it.
This is great. Are you goin for release an updated chart?
I did wonder how pharmacists celebrate pride, and now I know.
Would you believe that I had this epiphany while standing at the urinal in the OR break room & wondering “hmm, I’m clearly dehydrated right now. How I can educate my physicians, nurses, and scrub techs about dehydration & iatrogenic urine discoloration?”
Started to collect some info here & there, then BOOM! Pride arrived and I jumped on Paint 3D in the satellite pharmacy to create this masterpiece. Happy Pride from Portland, OR!
I honor of the LGBTQ community, I will pee every color of the rainbow this month

The real chart
Pretty sure its riboflavin, not B12 that colors the urine yellow.
Hydroxocobalamin makes urine very red
b6 as well!
I want methocarbomol so my pee can be black
I take it, and I’ve never seen that at all. I’d like to think I’d have noticed it, but I’ll damn sure be paying more attention now.
Methocarbamol as in Robax OTC products? I take that for backaches. (At least when I can get it - I live in the U.S. can can't get to Canada to buy it right now.)
I've never noticed any color changes in my urine when taking it.
Funny story. My GF and I moved in together in an apartment. Little while later, I come down with a bit of a cold but I have to work. So, I get up and take some pills from the sudaphed box and off to work I go. Do my med pass and chart some assessments and I’m about to burst. I run to the bathroom only to be met with highlighter orange pee. It was staining the toilet bowl. I immediately assume I am dying and promptly start to ruminate about my demise. The whole day I cannot stop thinking about it. And it only got worse every time I went pee and was met it Orange urine.
Get home and relay this to my GF, with impending death included. She proceeds to tell me that she consolidated pill boxes while moving and had put some AZO in that box of sudaphed...
You telling me there's medicine that can turn my pee blue
When I was in undergrad, some professors/grad students in the chemistry department would prank each other by slipping methylene blue into drinks...
DAWG REALLY XD
I remember my rifampin pee. Lol I was in such a situation I didn't even care I peed blood
Quinines can produce brownish/black urine
Methemoglobinemia or hypercalcemia in infants can cause blue urine as well
(PS this is a very good list, I was digging real deep to find anything to add. Solid medically related Pride month post too!)
I've never had black pee from methocarbomol but hey pretty sick
Interesting, my B vitamins make my urine more green than yellow.
I love pictures/diagrams like this! Thanks!
Riboflavin also makes urine as bright yellow as the tablets.
Cyanocobalamin (for cyanide toxicity) causes a red urine. I’ve heard it called a “port wine” color. I would describe it as kool-aid red
Doxorubicin! What goes in red must come out….
Nitazoxanide. Yellow as in highliter pens
Mitomycin bladder instillation will quite obviously turn your pee purple.
Not urine but in the same vein I suppose, dark green blood (sulfhemoglobinemia) https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(07)60918-0/fulltext
Idk but this is a really cool and useful visual!
give me that sorbital so I can pee like a metal band members from Kiss.
Some of the OTC Diurex pills can turn urine blue too!
Propofol was a blast when I had my endoscopy
Oh, bummer! I didn't think to look at my urine after propofol. I might not have seen much, though. I got an eye surgery and they only gave me enough for conscious sedation. Next time! Probably with my first colonoscopy if I can help it, which isn't for several years.
Former CPhT, now ICU RN here. It's usually not really noticeable unless on Propofol for multiple days/weeks when on a ventilator. I saw it a lot in patients with covid on high ventilator support and need to be heavily sedated for extended period of time.
Ah, that makes sense. I knew I wasn't on it enough for sure, but now I'm sure that I never want to see enough propofol in my urine.
levodopa brown urine
TIL pamelor can cause discolored urine
What colour does senna cause? I recall phenolphthalein, an ingredient that used to be very common in laxatives (but no longer), can turn your urine pink.
Light brownish I believe
Damn it. When I first saw this, I was eating Skittles. Now when I look at it and all the other comments, the only thing going through my head is "see the rainbow, taste the rainbow."
You missed sugar puffs mate 😆😂😆😂!!!!
Oh I love this, totally going to print out a pocket-sized one for my clinical rotations
Digoxin + Coumadin = dark brown
Not an Drug but Sprite (The soda) makes my urine clear. (Probably due to no colorant and the large amount of water in it)
