How can just appreciate how clever the VOO ticker symbol is?

How can just appreciate how clever the VOO ticker symbol is?

Related, I always thought it was weird that VTI is the etf without international exposure while VT is.

SoInsightful

I hate that VTI + VXUS is the complete opposite of International + US.

Hour_Ad_4272

VTI might be Vanguard Total Index VXUS might be Vanguard excluding US.

SoInsightful

For sure! And it bothers me. To begin with, why is "Vanguard Total Stock Market" (VTI) not the total stock market?? The name "VXUS" says to me "don't think of a pink elephant", because of course I will associate the name with the US.

throwitup1124

vXus....EX-US, NOT U.S.!!!!! har har

wastenpaste

Agreed with you totally

Scalermann

You know I never realized that until just now

Few_Dirt_8665

It get's better! * IVOO = S&P 400 (mid cap index... IV = 4) * VIOO = S&P 600 (small cap index... VI = 6) * VONE = Russell 1000 * VTWO = Russell 2000 Vanguard has some pretty good names! Albeit... SPY for S&P 500 I think is still the best ticker (though I just buy VOO).

DetroitCity1999

How can you not buy voo

Nostalgikt

Because VTI

DetroitCity1999

Why not both? Just kidding. But before i was in this sub I actually had hella overlap because I owned both

ITCHYisVegeta

I have both, and plan on keeping it that way for awhile.

FyreXYZ

I wouldn’t do that, if a major crash happens you can hop from one to the other to harvest tax-loss. They are pretty closely tied so one over the other doesn’t really matter

sogladatwork

VOTE

SoInsightful

>* VONE = Russell 1000 >* VTWO = Russell 2000 I think we need to establish that V can also mean "Vanguard" so we don't succumb to bad maths here.

Equally clever are the names of Fidelity's zero-expense funds (the middle three letters; the funds all start with F and end with X): ZRO (zero) ZIL (zilch) NIL ZIP They're awesome. 🍺

veRGe1421

lol that's great

savinger

Why is VO the mid cap index?

Few_Dirt_8665

IVOO is the mid cap index... aka the S&P 400

Ubunkus

Same with IOO the ishares global 100.

domosicecream

Pretty sure Vanguard was inspired by IOO for VOO. IOO launched like 10 years before VOO.

willalt319

I've always like Global X's thematic ETF names. PAVE (infrastructure), BUG (Cyber security), and DRIV (EV's) to name a few

JonathanL73

I love how certain ETFs get named like MJ for marijuana, UFO for space companies or NERD etf for video game sector.

WhiteHoney88

Wow. Never noticed til now. VGT and VTI’s tickers confused me sometimes. Don’t know why.

mp_h

I was today years old when I learned this. Smh

Cpt-Bootysweat

I dont want to be THAT guy but actually „D“ would stand for 500.

hmbayliss

Why you gotta be the 100 Luftballon?

soaringtiger

Wowowowowowow

rodrigkn

I had no idea! Also, I’m just going through these comments and adding to my “DD later” list. Great post!

Stonks1337

Next thing you’re gonna tell me is SPY is called SPY ticker cuz it represents the s&p500 index........ ok wise guy. If you’re so smart what is the QQQ mean in invesco QQQ?

tossintrash69420
