I think I’d be a little freaked out if Navier-Stokes predicted that there’d be a demon in my eddies

I read that as “demon in my undies” and now I can’t shake the image

That doesn’t sound too bad actually. Pretty sure there are whole anime tv shows about stuff like that

Lol is a very aerodynamic word.

SheliaTaylori

The bottom car is more aerodynamic going backwards..

RGB_OK

I thought a teardrop shape helps guide the air better and not create turbulence behind the car that has a suction effect on the car.

nlevine1988

Yup, the person you replied to probably doesn't know anything about aerodynamics

tinigame

what's the correct information?

punannimaster

then they made jeeps and they laughed and laughed...

alghiorso

I had a jeep and there was a significant and relatively steep downhill part of the highway on the way between my city and another. It would be all brake lights all the way down. It's a common trap spot for highway patrol. I'd just pop into neutral and coast down the hill maintaining speed with my air brakes

buckshot307

I’ve got a gladiator and it feels like it’s gonna tip over when a crosswind hits it. Surprisingly gets like 24mpg though which is better than my Tacoma, though my taco was a manual.

No_Creativity

That's better mpg than my mazda 3 lmao

berrset2

Don’t those have at max like 2.5 liter engines? If that’s the case that is astonishingly bad that they can’t get them above 24 MPG

No_Creativity

It's probably just my driving and the fact that I do 90% city driving but yeah I get 22-23 on average.

hndsmngnr

My 2020 mazda3 breaks 30 easy so idk what homeboy is talking about

No_Creativity

Mine's a 2021 "2.5 Turbo Premium Plus AWD," which I had to look up because they have 6 trim levels of the same car, but looking at what mazda quotes that's pretty average, at least for city driving.

ravengenesis1

Yeh that’s a turbo for the zoom zooms, not for milking.

No_Creativity

It does zoom, I do love my car even if it sounds like I'm bitching about it. I just picked a bad time to buy it with gas prices how they are

alghiorso

Yeah my TJ got maybe 19 on the highway with downhill and a tailwind lol

ebac7

My taco is a crunchy.

unk214

You get 24mpg? You must do a lot of highway. I get closer to 19/20. And yes on the wind part, usually when I reach over 70 I need to watch out for windy days.

buckshot307

Yeah kinda live at the far end of a long highway. I was surprised really because I think the manufacturer rating is like 19/20 highway. We’ve done some off-roading but I didn’t really pay attention to it at the time.

HughJorgens

Ah, the Rolls-Canardly method.

suzuki_hayabusa

Trucks are still made like this.

isecore

This is specifically an ad for the cars built by Tatra, a Czech company that still exists.

G1nger-Snaps

Is it?? I thought it would be the chrysler airflow

isecore

Huh, you might be right. Now I'm not as sure. I could've sworn that this was for Tatras early aerodynamic cars (which were built in the '30s) but now I am beset with doubt.

xcerj61

it is T77 https://www.garaz.cz/clanek/tatra-77-pred-85-lety-nastartovala-aerodynamickou-revoluci-21001257

isecore

Thanks for clearing that up!

vibraltu

They actually look quite similar, and they were designed around the same time. I think the Tatra 77 pre-dates the Chrysler Airflow by a year or so, but not much.

YogurtclosetUnique85

TATRA reference!

Powerthunfisch

moeburn

Man Jewish people can't catch a break huh. Even "old man wind" gotta have a hook nose.

stubobarker

First thing I noticed. Definitely has anti-Semitic overtones.

DancingPotato30

..What? Other, human beings have booked noses?- plus its easier to draw

stubobarker

Take a moment to check out anti-Semitic caricatures of Jews. Whether intentional or not, these drawings bear a great resemblance. And if in fact this is from a Czech auto company of the 1930’s, a time when anti-semitism was (again) on the rise in Europe, it’s more than plausible that being an advertisement, it was playing on these emotions.

sunchildphd

Dang! I wouldn’t have noticed but it makes complete sense. There are so many embedded stereotypes in supposedly benign, entertaining, or informative imagery that even pointing out the props brings out (mostly) unintentional gaslighting in people who want to believe the best about humanity. It’s easier to blame those who notice.

ryry117

You just believed him just because he said so? lmao. No, it's not a jew thing. Evil people/creatures having hooked noses existed before the jew stereotype. It attached itself as a Jew insult later. TLDR hooked noses were an insult before Jew was.

Fat_Blob_Kelly

hook noses were an insult before jew was? huh? you know Jews were persecuted in Europe for a long time. People even blamed The Bubonic Plague on Jews, they used to say they were tainting the water and intentionally making people sick. The use of hook noses in media as a bad thing originates from Jews having hook noses

ryry117

>hook noses were an insult before jew was? Yes. >know Jews were persecuted in Europe for a long time. Yes. I'm talking way before that. The jews didnt start in Europe. It's an insult that works against anyone. "big nose" is said to all kinds of people all the time. >The use of hook noses in media as a bad thing originates from Jews having hook noses No.

BurnOutBrighter6

[Understanding the Antisemitic History of the Hooked Nose Stereotype](https://www.media-diversity.org/understanding-the-antisemitic-history-of-the-hooked-nose-stereotype/)

Aleatory_Alien

Jeez, people sure like to see stupid things were they aren't. I don't believe this is anti semitic at all, like it doesn't make sense. And yeah get me all of the downvotes you want, your take is dumb af

Fat_Blob_Kelly

The way I saw it, they needed to convey wind resistance as a bad thing so they had to make the wind a villain, and stereotypical features of evil people back then included features like a hook nose due to racist undertones directed at Jews. it’s not directly saying jews are bad its using a hook nose to convey the wind as bad because hook noses were used to portray villains, the racism stems from why they used to use hook noses to portray villains

sprocketous

Racism sells!

BurnOutBrighter6

It doesn't make sense if you don't know that at the time (1930s) Nazi propaganda made Jews the go-to token "bad guy" across eastern Europe. The hook nose was the feature used to identify "Jews" in these caricatures. Please read this, it's not just a dumb take by some redditors to think this Czech poster from 1930s made air resistance a Jew so viewers understood it was "bad". [Understanding the Antisemitic History of the Hooked Nose Stereotype](https://www.media-diversity.org/understanding-the-antisemitic-history-of-the-hooked-nose-stereotype/)

Aleatory_Alien

No thanks. I get what you are saying, but you are reading way too deep into this. Jews didn't even came to my mind but if it did in yours then thats a thing you made yourself

BurnOutBrighter6

Fair enough, but my whole point was that it's *not* something I made by myself but something put into people's heads by 100+ years of media using the hooked nose as a negative caricature of Jewish features. The poster in OPs post is one of thousands of similar depictions casually making Jews the butt of whatever-we-don't-like. I'm glad you haven't seen these depictions enough to notice, thankfully media is better about such open racism these days. But at the time that poster was made in the 1930's, that hooked nose was totally a Jew and nobody cared because "Jew" just meant "generic badguy" at the time.

stubobarker

Educate yourself and you won’t look so foolish for telling someone they’re dumb af. Thanks to u/burnoutbrighter6 https://www.media-diversity.org/understanding-the-antisemitic-history-of-the-hooked-nose-stereotype/

BurnOutBrighter6

Thanks for the shoutout but I already replied to this person's comment with that link and said please read this. They literally said "no thanks" lol. Like, it's not that modern people now are just saying "Ha that looks like a Jew" on their own accord. They're *recognizing* this as part of 100 years of art and cultural history that has flown over that persons head. Thanks again for trying/,I'm glad someone gets it.

stubobarker

Fortunately, most people on here do get it. At least as evidenced by the “voting” results… The difficult part to overcome is the knee jerk reaction by those who think that an objective observation is itself a knee jerk reaction, or desire to read a deeper meaning, or even some kind of display of overly political correctness. It’s not. It’s just an observation. Your article explains why. Shame the guy would rather hold on to an ignorant opinion than take the risk of learning why he’s wrong. But this is Reddit, so pretty much to be expected.

Aleatory_Alien

I said their take was dumb af, not them. And yeah i will still hold to my beliefs that its just reading way too deep into something so simple as hook nose = sharp shapes = more threatening characteristics to make something look evil. Next thing you are going to tell me that Heinz Doof is an evil jew just because of his hook nose

DrJingleCock69

Idk why they made the god of wind look like a goblin from Harry Potter

chapterfour08

I guess Jews also have pointy elf ears too then? Lol

suzuki_hayabusa

So...you are saying that Jewish people have hooked nose? 🧐📸

Coldspyros

It’s a common stereotype. He’s pointing out the depiction.

MemriTVOfficial

Pretty much all middle easterners do

Ok_Substance_1560

Um no.

MemriTVOfficial

Ok

BurnOutBrighter6

Maybe, but the hooked nose is specifically the symbol for Jews in negative caricatures and stereotypes going all the way back to Nazi propaganda in the 1930s. https://www.media-diversity.org/understanding-the-antisemitic-history-of-the-hooked-nose-stereotype/

MemriTVOfficial

Most middle easterners have an impressive schnoz, don't really care what western propaganda has to say about it

redunculuspanda

Top one is basically the same shape a g wagon.

deusrev

And then they made SUV!

BrownEggs93

Ah, the 1930s. "More Doctors smoke Lucky...."

JustKimNotKimberly

That looks a lot like a drawing by James Thurber. Does anyone know?

IIRC there was a big move to aerodynamics until a Buckminster Fuller designed bus crashed and scared everybody off the teardrop design. Someone look it up. I am lazy..

Perfect! Not a 100% how I remembered it but certainly correct

I'm more worried that it says it's a steel/aluminum shell on an... ash frame? I assume they mean ash wood? The frame was made of wood?? 😳

It would be pretty funny if a company made a super-aerodynamic SUV.

me_bails

so basically a mini van with a solid rear axle and a turbo?

DavidXGA

The Tesla Model X has a drag coefficient of 0.24. At the time it was released, that was 20% lower than the next best SUV.

DrJingleCock69

Literally the point of the Tesla SUV's weird look, designed for lack of functionality in favor or aerodynamics

touf25

ryry117

Man I love the old drawings especially out of eastern europe where everything was personified. Trees, clouds, rocks, the wind, etc. It gives off a fairytale vibe. And not in a stupid cartoonish sense, but everything actually looked like a person, drawn realistically, making it a little creepy.

KnoblinQueen

*cries in Jeep owner.

They're not wrong though. That is basically how drag works. A remarkably simple example.

Ghost_Star326

I don't really support the quote but it just randomly came to my mind. "Aerodynamics is for those who don't know how to build an engine." ~ Enzo Ferrari

Deepthroats_throat

U right https://fgtaerodynamics.wordpress.com/2013/10/31/aerodynamics-are-for-people-who-cant-build-engines-by-enzo-ferrari/

manystorms

That sounds so fucking dumb when you think about it for more than a second. Imagine saying that to an aerospace engineer lol. This is why Ferraris are still combustible engine gas guzzlers. (Mad at Ferrari, not you).

Ghost_Star326

I can understand what you're saying. To me, I see Ferrari as an arrogant company that is always so full of itself. I can admit that they make amazing cars but they always put themselves high on the pedestal as if they're the only ones who know how to build a car while everyone else sucks in comparison. And their history of blacklisting and suing their own customers for the dumbest reasons make it more clear.

manystorms

Absolutely, incredibly arrogant and they haven’t earned the right to be so arrogant.

Hanginon

Then you look at ***[his designs](https://www.supercars.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-Ferrari-F8-Tributo.jpg)*** and realize he was just trying to throw the competition off.

Ghost_Star326

Well that's the company's decision on the design. Enzo died a long time ago.

Hanginon

It still has the bloodlines of ***[the designs](https://images4.alphacoders.com/102/thumb-1920-1025847.jpg)*** from almost 50 years ago when enzo was in charge.

uhhhhh_hhhhhh

IDontKnowCharles

Lowest Cd is blunt-ish front, pointy tail, like a modern submarine

Take an aerodynamics class before commenting incorrect information

Cheechak

Yep. Same with the Porsche 920 series of the 1980’s. You want the front of the raindrop facing forward.

Yes, 77.

I guess that nobody back then was willing to believe that bad something existed unless it was depicted as a jew.

Meanwhile Jeep was like hold my beer...

mack_the_yak_

That’s actually really clever

Jeep Wrangler in the first pic XD.

I should substitute the top car for my Jeep!

barzbub

Notice how is resembles a **WING**!? The teardrop is the ultimate aerodynamic shape! Unfortunately it also makes the car want to **FLY** 🤣 That’s why you see race cars with a **SHARK FIN** 😉
